Making Picture Frames
Picture frames can complement any photograph or artwork. Crafting your own adds a personal touch that mass-produced frames often lack. The process might seem intricate, but with the right tools and materials, anyone can create a beautiful custom frame.
Materials and Tools You Will Need
- Wood (commonly pine, oak, or maple)
- Mitre box and saw or a mitre saw
- Sandpaper
- Wood glue
- Clamps
- Picture frame backing material
- Frame hardware (e.g., D-ring hangers, picture wire)
- Paint or wood stain (optional)
- Glass or acrylic for the front of the frame
Selecting and Preparing the Wood
Start by choosing the right type of wood. Softwoods like pine are easier to cut and shape. Hardwoods such as oak offer durability and a more refined appearance. Once selected, measure the dimensions of your artwork to determine the size of the frame.
Use the mitre box and saw or a mitre saw to cut the wood. The angles should be 45 degrees, allowing the corners to fit together smoothly. After cutting, sand the edges to remove splinters and smooth the surface.
Assembling the Frame
Apply wood glue to the corners and fit them together. Use clamps to hold the pieces until the glue dries. This process ensures the joints are tight and secure. Remove excess glue with a damp cloth before it dries completely.
For added strength, consider adding small nails or pins to the joints. Make sure they are driven in carefully to avoid splitting the wood. If you choose to stain or paint your frame, now is the time. Apply even coats and allow them to dry fully.
Once the frame is dry, attach the backing material. Measure and cut it to fit snugly within the frame. This backing will support the artwork and keep it in place.
Inserting the Artwork
Clean the glass or acrylic thoroughly before installing it in the frame. Place it gently within the frame, on top of the backing material. Next, position your artwork carefully over the glass or acrylic, ensuring it is centered and straight.
Secure the backing with small nails or frame clips. These will keep everything in place and prevent the artwork from shifting. Check that the frame is securely fastened and none of the corners are loose.
Adding Frame Hardware
Attach D-ring hangers to the back of the frame. Measure equal distances from the top to ensure balance. Use screws to secure the hangers, making sure they are tightly fastened.
Cut a length of picture wire, allowing extra length for adjustments. Thread the wire through the hangers and twist the ends to secure. The wire should have some slack to accommodate hanging on a wall hook.
Maintenance Tips
- Dust the frame regularly to keep it clean.
- Avoid using harsh chemicals as they can damage the finish.
- Inspect the frame periodically to ensure the hardware is still secure.
Picture frames crafted by hand add a special element to your home decor. They embody your effort and creativity. Each frame tells a story beyond the picture it holds, making it a unique addition to your space.
