Southwest has an unofficial but predictable fare sale calendar that drops the prices on some routes nearly every Tuesday. While it's not a published policy, these generally run from Tuesday through Thursday and offer one-way prices on select routes as low as $39.

Senior Fares apply only to those in the traveling party who are age 65 or over. Southwest Airlines has other discounted fares for those not meeting the above age requirements. Some restrictions and seating limitations may apply.

Examples of the low $49 one-way fares are between Burbank and Oakland, between Los Angeles and Sacramento, between Ontario and San Jose, and between San Diego and Oakland.

Southwest Airlines is discounting flights ahead of a busy summer travel season. The Dallas, Texas-based airline recently announced the "Start Off Summer With A Sale” event, which provides fares as low as $49 one-way.
